German duke who was the penultimate ruler of Saxe-Meiningen, reigning from 1866 to 1914. For his support for his successful court theatre he was also known as the 'Theaterherzog' (theatre duke).Sy Scholfield quotes from "Schriften ..., Issues 11-15" (Gadow, 1891), p. 26: "am 4. April aber der Einzug in die Residenz Mein in gen statt, von welchem die Chronik (S. 229) berichtet: „Nie hat Meiningen etwas Prachtvolleres und Glänzenderes gesehen." Am 2. April 1826 Abends halb 10 Uhr wurde dem Herzogl. Hause ein Prinz, der jesst regierende Herzog geboren." (But on the 4th of April the entry in the residence of Meiningen, the chronicle (p. 229) reports: "Never has Meiningen seen anything more splendid." On 2 April 1826, at half-before ten [nine-thirty] in the evening, a prince was born the governing duke).
