What is Kundali Milan?

Kundali Milan (कुंडली मिलान) is horoscope matching for marriage. Rooted in the classical texts of Vedic astrology, it compares the two partners’ birth charts — primarily the position of the Moon and its nakshatra — to measure how naturally their lives, minds and temperaments fit together.

The heart of the process is Gun Milan: eight factors, called kootas, are each awarded a set number of points. Together they add up to a match score out of 36 gunas. Alongside this score, an astrologer also checks for key doshas — such as Mangal Dosha (Manglik), Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha — that can affect the marriage regardless of the number.

Because it relies on the Moon’s nakshatra, accurate Kundali Milan needs the date, time and place of birth for both people — not just their names.

The Ashtakoot: 8 Kootas of Gun Milan

Each koota measures a different layer of compatibility and carries its own weight — from a single point for Varna to eight points for Nadi. Add them up and you get the familiar score out of 36.

1pt

Varna

Varan

Spiritual compatibility and ego balance — how each partner’s inner nature and sense of duty align.

2pts

Vashya

Vasya

Mutual attraction and influence — the natural give-and-take of magnetism and control between the two.

3pts

Tara

Dina

Health, fortune and destiny — the compatibility of birth stars (nakshatras) for well-being and longevity.

4pts

Yoni

Yoni Kuta

Physical and intimate compatibility — instinctive and biological harmony, mapped through classical animal symbols.

5pts

Graha Maitri

Rashyadhipati

Mental and intellectual bond — the friendship between the lords of both Moon signs, and how the minds meet.

6pts

Gana

Temperament

Disposition and nature — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa temperament, and whether two personalities move at the same rhythm.

7pts

Bhakoot

Rashi

Emotional and financial harmony — the Moon-sign relationship that shapes love, family welfare and prosperity.

8pts

Nadi

Health & progeny

Health, genes and progeny — the deepest karmic and physiological layer, carrying the highest weight of all eight.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36 gunas — the maximum Ashtakoot Gun Milan score.

The 36 Guna Score — What It Means

A higher score points to a more effortless match, but the number is only a starting point. Doshas and their cancellations can shift the picture entirely.

Below 18

Not recommended

Traditionally considered too low for a harmonious match on the score alone.

18 – 24

Acceptable

The classical minimum. A workable match, especially once doshas are checked.

24 – 32

Very good

A strong, well-aligned match across most of the eight factors.

32 – 36

Excellent

A rare, deeply compatible union by the Ashtakoot system.

Doshas in Kundali Milan

Beyond the guna count, three doshas are weighed carefully — and each has traditional conditions under which it is cancelled.

Mangal Dosha (Manglik)

Formed when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. It is examined for temperament, harmony and longevity in marriage.

Often cancelled (Manglik Bhanga) when both partners are Manglik, when Mars is in its own or exalted sign, or through specific placements and aspects.

Nadi Dosha

Formed when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). It carries the highest weight — 8 gunas — and is linked to health and progeny.

Can be nullified when the couple share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, the same nakshatra but different padas, or through certain planetary lordships.

Bhakoot Dosha

Formed when the two Moon signs fall in a 6–8, 2–12 or 5–9 relationship. It affects emotional bonding, family welfare and financial stability.

Commonly cancelled when both Moon signs share the same lord, or when the two sign lords are mutual friends.

Beyond the number

Why 36 Gunas Are Only the Beginning

The Ashtakoot score is a fast, time-tested summary — but a marriage is not a number. The Navamsa (D9) chart reveals the deeper pattern of the union, Dasha timing shows when the relationship peaks and when it will test you, and the friendship of the planets describes how two people actually talk, argue and make up. A complete Kundali Milan reads all of these together.

Kundali Milan FAQs

What is Kundali Milan?
Kundali Milan is the traditional Vedic method of matching two birth charts (kundalis) to assess marriage compatibility. Also called Gun Milan, Guna Milan, Kundli Milan or Ashtakoot horoscope matching, it compares the Moon-sign and nakshatra positions of both partners across eight factors and scores the match out of 36 gunas.
What is the difference between Kundali Milan and Gun Milan?
They describe the same practice. Kundali Milan is the broad term for horoscope matching; Gun Milan (or Guna Milan) specifically names the 36-guna Ashtakoot scoring at the heart of it. In everyday use the terms are interchangeable.
How many gunas are required for marriage?
Traditionally a minimum of 18 out of 36 gunas is considered acceptable. Below 18 is generally not advised on the score alone, 18–24 is average, 24–32 is very good, and 32–36 is excellent. The presence or cancellation of doshas matters as much as the raw score.
What are the eight kootas of Ashtakoot?
The eight kootas are Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — adding up to 36 gunas. Each measures a different layer of compatibility, from temperament and intellect to physical harmony and progeny.
What is Manglik or Mangal Dosha matching?
Mangal Dosha (being “Manglik”) occurs when Mars is placed in specific houses from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. It is checked separately from the guna score for its effect on marital harmony. In many cases the dosha is cancelled — for example when both partners are Manglik — which is why a proper reading looks beyond a simple yes or no.
What are Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha?
Nadi Dosha arises when both partners share the same Nadi, and is linked to health and progeny. Bhakoot Dosha arises from certain Moon-sign relationships (6–8, 2–12 or 5–9) and affects emotional and financial harmony. Both have well-known cancellation conditions that a complete Kundali Milan takes into account.
Can Kundali Milan be done by name only, or is date of birth needed?
Authentic Kundali Milan is based on the Moon’s nakshatra, which requires each person’s date, time and place of birth. Name-based matching is only a simplified proxy that estimates the birth star from the first syllable of the name. For an accurate result, use full birth details for both partners.
Can we still marry with a low score or a dosha?
Yes. A low guna score or a dosha is not a verdict — it flags areas that need awareness and, where relevant, remedies. Many strong marriages have modest scores, and most doshas have traditional cancellations. This is exactly why our report explains each factor in plain language instead of reducing your relationship to a single number.
Is Kundali Milan really necessary?
Kundali Milan is a tool for understanding, not a pass-or-fail test. It highlights where two people naturally harmonise and where they will need patience — around temperament, intimacy, communication, finances and family. Used well, it helps couples enter marriage with clarity rather than fear.
