German art dealer during the 1920s. She became known as Mutter Ey (Mother Ey) for the nurturing support she provided to her artists, who included Max Ernst and Otto Dix. She defended Gert Heinrich Wollheim and Dix when they were hauled into court on charges that their paintings were immoral. According to art historian Sergiusz Michalsky, "Johanna Ey's portrait was painted more often than that of any other woman in Germany." She died on 27 August 1947.Sy Scholfield cites birth certificate quoted in "Schriften und Reden: Briefe aus dem Rheinland" by Heinrich Böll (Deutscher Taschenbuch, 1985), p. 107: "Geburtsurkunde No. 22. Bürgermeisterei Wickrath, Kreis Grevenbroich, Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf: Im Jahre tausend achthundert sechzig vier, den fünften des Monats Mäerz, vormittags zehn Uhr erschien vor Hugo Naegele, Bürgermeister, als Beamten des Personenstandes der ... dem Komparenten, am vierten Maerz dieses Jahres nachmittags zwei Uhr ein Kind weiblichen Geschlechtes geboren."
