Public Information
Italian statesman, de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic and the most powerful and enthusiastic patron of Renaissance culture in Italy. Also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent (Lorenzo il Magnifico) by contemporary Florentines, he was a magnate, diplomat, politician and patron of scholars, artists, and poets. As a patron, he is best known for his sponsorship of artists such as Botticelli and Michelangelo. Sy Scholfield quotes Bertoldo Di Giovanni, Sculptor of the Medici Household by James David Draper (University of Missouri Press, 1992): "[Janet] Cox-Rearick cites particulars concerning Lorenzo's astrological chart that also govern the design. Lorenzo was a New Year's Day child, born at 7:30 in the morning of January 1, 1449. In his horoscope, Saturn is Lord of the Ascendant ... At that hour, Mars is Lord of the Mid-Heaven 'and the most significant planet in relation to Lorenzo's rulership.'" Draper cites the book, "Dynasty and Destiny in Medici Art: Pontormo, Leo X" by Janet Cox Rearick (Princeton University Press, 1984).
