British writer, a poet, critic and dramatist prominent among the literary figures of his day. At age 12, Henley had T.B. of the bone and one leg was amputated below the knee. Though his education was periodically interrupted, he completed Oxford. At the age of 24, he went to Joseph Lister, who saved his other gangrenous foot. During his 20 months of treatment with Dr. Lister, he wrote his famed work, "Invictus." ("I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.")Beatrice L.
