American pro athlete, a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals (1959-1975). Although he played with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team for a short while, baseball became his career. He was known for his fastball and slider pitches and competitive spirit. After a stellar 1968 season he was named the National Leage Most Valuable Player. Of the nine World Series games he started, he won seven. In 1964 and 1967 he was named World Series Most Valuable Player.
