Hereditary Prince of Brunswick, Prince of Hanover, and head of the House of Hanover from 1953 until his death. He was the eldest son of Ernst August, Duke of Brunswick and Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, the youngest child and only daughter of Wilhelm II, Ernst August's third cousin in descent from George III of the United Kingdom. Ernst August's parents were, therefore, third cousins, once removed. Sy Scholfield forwarded news report from "Hamburger Nachrichten," 18 March 1914: "der Geburt des Erbprinzen lautet: Auf Höchsten Befehl bringen wir hierdurch zur allgemeinen Kenntnis, dass die Herzogin Viktoria Luise heute vormittag 5 Uhr von einem gesunden Erbprinzen glücklich entbunden worden ist. ... Braunschweig, den 18. März." (The birth of the hereditary prince: The official news is that the Duchess Viktoria Luise was happily delivered of a healthy hereditary prince this morning at five o'clock. ... Braunschweig, the 18th of March).
