King of Portugal and the Algarves 1656-1683, the second King of the House of Braganza, known as "the Victorious" (o Vitorioso). He succeeded his father (João IV) on 6 November 1656 at the age of thirteen. His mother acted as regent for six years, until 1662. Sy Scholfield quotes from "A Rainha D. Maria Francisca de Sabóia: (1646-1683) : ensaio biográfico" by António Álvaro Dória (Livraria Civilização, 1944), p. 21: "Foi a uma sexta-feira, 21 de Agosto de 1643, às sete horas e um quarto da manhã, que em Lisboa nasceu o Infante D. Afonso, quarto génito da varonil D. Luísa de Gusmão, filha do Duque de Medina-Sidónia e Rainha de Portugal."
