Indonesian politician, appointed the fifth President of Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country and third-largest democracy, in Jakarta at 15:50 local time (14:20 GMT) on 7/23/2001. The daughter of Indonesia's first president, Achmed Sukarno, her first name, Megawati, refers to the rain clouds under which she was born ("Mega") while her second name, Sukarnoputri, means Daughter of Sukarno. Sy Scholfield quotes "Sukarno: An Autobiography as told to Cindy Adams." Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1965, p. 246 has year and place, p. 247 has "Never will I forget the night of January 23. It was thundering. My wife lay in the bedroom which had been outfitted specially as a hospital. Suddenly the lights went out, the roof caved in, the dark, swollen clouds opened and water rained in like a river. The doctor and the Sisters carried [my wife] Fatmawati into her own sleeping room. She was soaked, as were the instruments, bedclothes, everything. In the darkness, by the light of a candle, our daughter was born. We named her Megawati. Mega means clouds."
