[however] ... we now know that Steuben was born on September 17, 1730 ... [according to] ... a photograph from the baptismal register of the old German Reformed Church in Magdeburg ... [and that] ... In 1786, on his fifty-sixth birthday, [Steuben] wrote a letter, in French, to his young American friend and former aide-de-camp, William North. The opening paragraph of this letter is translated as follows: On the seventeenth of September, 1730, at six o'clock in the evening, there was born at Magdeburg, Frederick William Augustus, etc., etc., etc."
