American author of five books about Appalachia: Land of Yesterday (autobiography), The Mountains Wept (autobiographical novel), Pilgrimage To An Appalachian Mining Camp, Voices from Appalachia, and My Mountain Angel. He also was the author of Appalachia—The Land And Its People, a 20-page newspaper supplement published in 1992 by the Dayton Daily News for use in schools in the Dayton, Ohio area. His books are used in classrooms in numerous school systems throughout Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. He died May 30, 2007 at 5:17 a.m. in Hospice of Dayton, Ohio.Sy Scholfield quotes "HOME IN THE HILLS IN WORDS AND IMAGES, A DAYTON AUTHOR RECALLS HIS WEST VIRGINIA YOUTH," 8 January 1995, Dayton Daily News, p. 1E: "In case you never heard of it, though, Jarrell's Branch is a hollow in southern West Virginia. ... Dr. Prather, the mining company doctor, delivered me at home one hot July night in 1936. Mommy, Daddy and Dr. Prather discussed the time of my birth, and since no one could say for sure whether I was born before midnight or after, they decided to declare it after midnight so my birthday would fall on the Fourth of July."
