American prominent minister and founder of Yale University in 1703. Born into a family of prominent colonial clergymen, he was educated at Harvard, receiving his B.A. in 1678 and his M.A. in 1681. A formidable scholar and scientist, he was one of the first Americans elected to the Royal Society, (1713) and a leader in the campaign for small pox inoculations.
