Mexican self-taught scholar, philosopher, poet of the Baroque school, and Hieronymite nun of New Spain. Although she lived in a colonial era when Mexico was part of the Spanish Empire, she is considered today both a Mexican writer and a contributor to the Spanish Golden Age, and she stands at the beginning of the history of Mexican literature in the Spanish language. In English, her name translates as Joan Agnes of the Cross. She is also known as Sor Juana (Spanish for Sister Joan). Juana Inés de la Cruz died in Mexico city on 17 April 1695.Sy Scholfield quotes "A Woman of Genius: The Intellectual Autobiography of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz" by Margaret Sayers Peden (Lime Rock, 1982), p. 5: "The two principal sources for biographical information remain, after centuries, La Respuesta itself, and a brief biographical essay which borrows heavily from La Respuesta published in 1700 by Father Diego Callejas. These documents tell us that Juana was born on November 12, 1651, at eleven o'clock in the morning (although recently some scholars have accepted an earlier date, 1648)."
