Mexican philosopher, historian and archaeologist. His work was focused on the investigation of the history of the peoples of Mesoamerica. He was a member of a traditionalist family and middle class. In 1945 he acquired the degree of Master in Ethnology at the National School of Anthropology and (ENAH) of Mexico. He taught at the Ecole Normale de León. Later he held a position as a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). At age 19, he received an invitation from Alfonso Caso to join the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), where he developed professionally until his death. He was also a visiting professor at various US institutions, including the universities of Texas, Illinois, California in Los Angeles and the University of Minnesota.
