British writer and publisher, a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group known by the nickname "Bunny" to friends and intimates all his life. He was the only child of the writer, critic and publisher Edward Garnett and his wife Constance, a prolific translator of Russian literature. Sy Scholfield quotes from "Constance Garnett: a heroic life" by Richard Garnett (Sinclair-Stevenson, 1991), p. 77: "On 10 March, after a stormy night, Edward was able to telegraph his father: 'David Garnett arrived safely last night. Constance all right.' He hastened to send his father the wherewithal to cast a nativity: 'The time of birth was a quarter to twelve (at night) exactly, Greenwich time...'"
