Prussian royalty, a member of the Hohenzollern dynasty, he was Elector of Brandenburg (1688–1713) and Duke of Prussia in personal union (Brandenburg-Prussia). The latter function he upgraded to royalty, becoming the first King in Prussia (1701–1713). From 1707 he was in personal union the sovereign prince of the Principality of Neuchâtel (German: Fürstentum Neuenburg). The Rise, Birth ... of All the Present Chief Princes of the World (Randall Taylor, 1694), p. 25: "Frederick III. the present Marquess of Brandenburg, great Chamberlain of the Empire, and Elector, Duke of Pruffia, &c. born at Nine of the Clock in the Morning, July 1. anno 1657." Two dates are given, 1 and 11 July, but they are the same as the first is a Julian date and the second a Gregorian date.
