French philosopher and prolific author. A believer in socialistic societies who promoted equality, cooperation,and self-fulfillment within communities he argued in the early 19th century for women's equal rights. He is credited with using the word 'féminisme' as early as 1808, the year in which he published his first work, "The Social Destiny of Man." He died in Paris on October 10, 1837.Sy Scholfield quotes data from 'an old family paper, a copy of the record of the births of the four Fourrier children' as transcribed in Charles Pellarin's book, 'The Life of Charles Fourier' (W.H. Graham, 1848), p. 114: 'He came into the world at six o'clock in the morning, 7th April, 1772 ... at Besancon.' PT notes that other sources give 1773 as the birth year.
