Vedic Horoscope for Espey, John

American memoirist, fiction-writer and literary scholar/critic. Espey described the world of his Shanghai childhood in a series of humorous sketches in The New Yorker magazine which he collected into the books Minor Heresies (New York: Knopf, 1945), Tales Out of School (New York: Knopf, 1947) and The Other City (New York: Knopf, 1950). Espey's fiction includes two "California" novels: The Anniversaries (1963) and An Observer (1965). His literary scholarship includes the early monograph Ezra Pound's "Mauberley": A Study in Composition (London: Faber & Faber, 1955; Berkeley: University of California Press, 1974), and, with Richard Ellman, Oscar Wilde: Two Approaches (1977). He died on 26 September 2000. Sy Scholfield quotes time and place from him in "Minor Heresies, Major Departures: A China Mission Boyhood" by John Jenkins Espey (University of California Press, 1994): "... at 171 North Szechuen Road [in Shanghai]. Not only was I born in the principal's residence; I was born on a school day just as the eight-o'clock bell rang." Date from "Who's who in American Education" by Robert Cecil Cook (1944): "ESPEY, John Jenkins, Asst. Prof, of Eng.. Occidental Coll. ... b. Jan. 16, 1913, Shanghai, China: s. J. Morton Espey and Mary (Jenkins)."
