Peruvian historian, lawyer and diplomat. In 1936 he entered the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), where he graduated as Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Literature in 1942. After obtaining a degree in law, he was authorized as a lawyer in 1943. In his soul university mater he taught History of Peru, but he chose to exercise his profession and pursue research on various events of Peruvian republican history. In 1955 he became a full member of the National Academy of History, whose presidency served from 1979 to 1995. He was also a member of the Centre for Maritime Historical Studies, member of the Institute of Higher Studies José de la Riva Agüero Catholic University and corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of History of Spain. In the 1990s he put his diplomatic skills to achieve peace between Peru and Ecuador, and he researched the history of the border demarcation between the two countries, which made several trips to Ecuador. In one of those trips he died of a heart condition on 7 December 1998, when it was about to be eighty years old. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Sun of Peru.
