British peer, courtier and Whig politician. He was born the 6th Duke of Devonshire, styled Marquess of Hartington until 1811. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1827 and 1828 and again between 1830 and 1834. Sy Scholfield quotes "Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire" by Brian Masters (Hamish Hamilton, 1981), p. 185: "letters home to his mother throughout the period from April to August 1790, ... On 21 May, the doctor scribbled a very quick note to his mother. 'About an hour after I sealed my letter of last night', he said, 'Her Grace's labour came on pretty violent, and after one of the best times I ever attended she was delivered at one o'clock this morning of a remarkable fine boy.'"
