American spy during the Civil War, she was a Southerner who used her position at her dad's hotel to convey information to Confederate Generals Stonewall Jackson and Turner Ashby. With her social skills she managed to visit soldiers, flirt with officers and watch military formations. She was arrested on July 29, 1862 but released shortly thereafter. Again arrested in June 1863, she was released on December 1 that year because she had contracted typhoid. She sailed to Europe to recover and there became an entertainer.
