Canadian professor and writer, producing works of fiction, poetry, history and biography. He and fellow writers founded the journal Tish and he served as editor from 1961-1963.. A Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, he was named Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate in 2002, the first person to be awarded that distinction. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002 and the Order of British Columbia in 2004. Sy Scholfield quotes 'Essays on Canadian Writing' (University of California, no. 51-52), p. 297: 'My mother Pearl gave birth to me, her first child, in Penticton, British Columbia, at 11:30 pm on 1 December 1935.'
