French lawyer and senior official whose murder has never been solved. On 13 January 1886, around 9 p.m., his dead body was found by a lamp operator of the Western Railway between the two tracks of the bridge spanning the main arm of the Seine between Maisons-Laffitte and Sartrouville. The top of his face was bandaged with a handkerchief marked with the letter "V" concealing, on the left temple, a wound caused by a small caliber (7 mm) revolver bullet which had punctured his brain. The bandage, firmly tied, as well as the absence of the weapon formally excluded the thesis of suicide and validated that of murder.
