French writer. In Paris, he became friends with Charles Baudelaire, Champfleury and Nadar. From 1848 he ran newspapers in Orleans but returned to Paris in 1850. In 1866, his wife and daughter died in a typhoid epidemic. This tragedy affected his mental health.
