German actress who married noted physician and microbiologist Robert Koch on 13 September 1893 when she was a twenty-one-year-old art student. He was twenty-eight years older than her, and had divorced his first wife Emmy Koch earlier that year after 26 years of marriage. Unlike Emmy, Hedwig gladly accompanied Koch on his numerous trips abroad. Sy Scholfield cites birth record quoted in Robert Koch: Seuchenjäger und Nobelpreisträger by Johannes W. Grüntzig and Heinz Mehlhorn (Spektrum Akademischer, 2010), p. 254: "Der Geburtsschein Hedwig Freibergs scheint verloren gegangen zu sein, erhalten geblieben ist ein Auszug des Taufregisters der evangelischen Kirche Sophien in Berlin Jahrgang 1872, Seite 95 Nr. 754, wonach sie am 24. Juli 1872 abends elf Uhr geboren wurde (Abb. 5.25)."
