Nepal’s royal family were killed in a shooting by the crown prince, Dipendra, who gunned down eight family member, apparently in a dispute over his choice of a bride. The Sunday Times, UK mentioned that gun fire was first heard "around 10:00 PM" on Friday night, though it seems to have stretched sporadically on till 11:00 PM or so. The dead included King Birendra, Queen Aiswarya, Prince Nirajan, 22, and Princess Shruti, 24. Along with Dipendra’s mother and father, sister and brother, four other family members were shot to death before he turned the gun upon himself. The massacre is considered the worst mass murder of royals since the Romanovs were slain on the orders of Lenin in 1918.
