Public Information

German mercenary leader (German: Landsknechte). Appointed in 1532 as the High Commander (Locotenent) over the entire rank and file of the Imperial Army, he later became Grand Marshal and Major-General. He died on 18 November 1577 in Burtenbach. Sy Scholfield quotes "Leben und Taten des weiland wohledeln Ritters Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach" by Wilhelm Engelbert Oeftering (A. Langen, 1910), p. 5: "Sebastian Schertlin zu Burtenbach Hohenburg und Bissingen, Ritter und Obrister, Römisch Kaiserlicher Majestät Rat, bin im Iahr 1496 den 12. Februar an einem Sonntag morgens um 4 Uhr geboren."
