Public Information

British poet, literary critic and historian. He was a leading scholarly authority on D. H. Lawrence, and appeared for the defence (Penguin Books) in the 1960 Lady Chatterley's Lover trial.Sy Scholfield quotes Vivian de Sola Pinto's book, "The City That Shone: An Autobiography (1895-1922)" (Hutchinson, 1969), p. 9: "my birth on 9th December 1895 was an occasion of great rejoicing. The winter of 1895 was a cold one and my father told me that when he went to fetch the doctor on the night of my birth it was snowing. I was born at 11.15 pm."
