The Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country (with over 1.2 billion people), and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.Ashish Seth quotes from news report: "New Delhi. Jan. 26. The birth of Indian sovereign democratic republic was proclaimed at 10-1[?] this morning" ("India Proclaimed Sovereign Democratic Republic," Indian Express, 28 January 1950, p. 1 [1]). The last numeral of the time is blurred so Sy Scholfield found another reference in The Bombay Civic Journal, Volume 9 (1962), p. 68: "INDIA was proclaimed a Sovereign Democratic Republic on Thursday January 26, 1950, at 10-18 a.m., the last Representative of the Crown, Shri C. Rajagopala-chari, reading out a proclamation to that effect in the oval-shaped Durbar Hall of Government House, in New Delhi."
