Italian volcanic disaster at Mount Vesuvius.The strongest eruption since 1631,the strongest in 2oth century.Boscotrease and San Giuseppe were destroyed.In San Giuseppe died 105 people as they were - in the moment of the main eruption - in church.There was also gas coming with a velocity of up to 500m/s;the walls of the volcano collapsed, the mountain was now 107m deeper.The walls near Napoli's area fell as the roofs.A lightning accompanied the event.Ottaviano and Torre Annunciata were in danger.The Olympic Games - planned for 1908 in Rome - couldn't take place;the damage was too high.216 men lost their lives;many were seriously wounded.More than 100 000 people got homeless,flying to Naples.M.A.Koenig:"Geologische Katastrophen" (Ott Vlg.Thun 1984,page 80);ingv.it (Sezione di Napoli):Osservatore Vesuviano:"L'eruzione del Vesuvio del 1906".The true beginning of the eruption was on April 4.The (italian)article was written 2006 for the centenary of the event.
